The Columbia Firefighters Association wants to promote the good work of firefighters that may not realize are appreciated and being noticed. Through our website, www.iaff793.org, under the “SUPPORT US” tab any firefighter or citizen can submit commendations of a firefighter going above and beyond to serve the citizens of Columbia and Richland County.

Today we highlight IAFF Local 793 member, SFF Bryce Machain. Machain came to the Columbia Fire Department in 2017. Machain began his career at Station 3 (Bluff Rd.) where he quickly became more involved with the HazMat program and gaining certifications and training towards that area of expertise. Station 3 is home of Engine 3 and HazMat 1 where Machain remains stationed as a senior firefighter and an important part of Columbia Fire Department’s Special Operations program. Machain is originally from Chicago and his interests include hiking, reading, and house music.

In a commendation received for Machain they stated, “Bryce has shown so much commitment to the HazMat program. He has invested so much time, energy and effort into a program that has been largely forgotten about. He also teaches at the fire academy to share his passion and knowledge to young firefighters.”

Today we highlight IAFF Local 793 member, SFF Daniel Hathaway. Hathaway came to the Columbia Fire Department in 2018. Hathaway began his career at Station 13 (North Main St.) and now serves as a permanent move-up driver on Engine 8. Hathaway is a member of the SC Army National Guard where he serves as a 12M, an Army Firefighter. Hathaway has also served a deployment in Romania. As a firefighter he has always been passionate about pump theory and pump operations. Hathaway loves to lift weights and is a history buff. Hathaway grew up in Irmo, is a graduate of the Citadel, and now a resident of Mauldin. He chooses to commute and work for Columbia because of its reputation as the largest and leading fire department in the state. His hobbies on his days off include spending time with his family and friends and also building models of ships.

In a commendation received for Hathaway they stated, “SFF Hathaway has a very positive interaction every time he goes out into the community whether it be to a call or just to the grocery store. When the Public interacts with him they normally walk away with a smile and the time-honored idea that you can always talk to a firefighter.”

In another submission someone also said, “SFF Hathaway has gone above and beyond over this last year fulfilling a move up role as Engineer for Station 8, He has done an excellent job learning his area and providing a strong leadership for the crew at station 8 as well as training 2 probationary firefighters and improving their skills for the department.”

Again, in another submission from 2022 someone stated, “SFF Daniel Hathaway is a fantastic teacher. He doesn’t let his guys fail.”

Today we highlight IAFF Local 793 member, SFF Keith Stokes. Stokes came to the Columbia Fire Department in 2017 and was first stationed on Engine 6 (Broad River Rd.) where he remains stationed today. Upon graduating recruit school Stokes earned the physical fitness award and the Maltese award: given to the top performing firefighter of their recruit class. During his time at Columbia he had received the fire department’s Stork Award in November 2021: given to a firefighter who renders medical aid involving child birth or a patient in labor. Stokes had also earned the fire department’s Phoenix Award multiple times: given in recognition of the member’s critical judgements and actions in performing life-preserving or life-resuscitative efforts for severely injured or ill patients (November 2018, October 2021). Stokes is a veteran of the Georgia Army National Guard.

In a commendation received for Stokes they stated, “SFF Stokes has unbridled passion for being a fireman and you can see it every day. He sets high standards for himself and for those around him because he is constantly working to be the best. His drive to be the best should not be confused with arrogance, but instead confidence in himself and his skills. By setting his bar high, he not only sets expectations for himself but also for his brothers and sisters. He has the ability to teach in such a manner that everyone around him understands the lesson, a trait that is not always easy to find. SFF Stokes is an incredible asset to this department and should be celebrated.”

Today we highlight IAFF Local 793 member, FEO JC Crum. Crum was a full-time firefighter for Forest City Fire Rescue in North Carolina before he came to the Columbia Fire Department in 2015. Crum was first assigned to Engine 2 (Olympia). After a year Crum was asked to come to Engine 9 (Devine St.) where he remains stationed today. Crum helps teach as an adjunct instructor for Columbia’s own recruit academy and also assists with teaching engine company operations classes throughout the state. Crum’s most memorable moment as a firefighter is when he and FF Ryan Sondervan rescued a woman and pulled her out of a fire on Kennedy St. Crum is a certified SCUBA diver. Outside of fighting fires, Crum, his wife, and their 3 kids live on a farm and enjoy agriculture, westerns, and aviation.

In a commendation received for Crum they stated, “Engineer Crum has always been extremely helpful and knowledgeable when it comes to this job. The only thing that surpasses his skill and knowledge is his passion for being a firefighter. Engineer Crum takes it upon himself to go to external trainings and not only soak up all that he can, he comes back and shares it with his peers. He does this because he cares about those around him but also because he wants to better our department and our profession. Engineer Crum always has a smile on his face when you see him and is always open to any questions one may have about the job or something they are trying to accomplish. Crum is a selfless leader who never looks to take credit for anything, but instead insists that the team get the win. Engineer Crum represents the best in our department every day.”

Today we highlight IAFF Local 793 member, Battalion Chief Matthew Huffstetler. Huffstetler came to the Columbia Fire Department in 2007. His father had retired from the Columbia Fire as a Battalion 4 Chief with 25 years of services and retired in 2006. Growing up Huffstetler worked for his family’s business moving and installing manufactured homes and 5 years ago he had branched out and began his own business. Huffstetler was first stationed on Engine 6 on Broad River Rd. He did a short stint as an engineer on Ladder 8, but returned to Engine 6 as a captain. Chief Huffstetler says he’s been successful because of the crews he worked with. He said, “Your crew members will make or break you. You are only as good as the men and women you have behind you. I pride myself in those people who’ve worked under me and are now in leadership roles. I would say this is the thing that gives me the greatest feeling of accomplishment in the fire service. The fire service is not about the “I” mentality it’s a “we”. If it ever becomes just about you, you’ve forgot where you came from. Leaders lead from the front.” Away from fighting fire Huffstetler enjoys deer hunting, weight lifting, and watching Gamecock football.

In a commendation received for Huffstetler they stated, “Chief Huffstetler constantly works to not only better the men and women under his command, but also those around him regardless of whether or not they are on his shift. His guidance and mentorship has been felt by numerous members of our department and he continually works to improve morale with everyone he comes into contact with. Chief Huff represents what all of us should strive to be.”

Today we highlight IAFF Local 793 member, SFF Jimmy Barker. Barker came to the Columbia Fire Department in 2013. Barker began his career at Station 12 (North Main St.) where he remains stationed at today. Outside of fighting fire Barker enjoys weightlifting, golf, hiking, and cooking/grilling.

In a commendation received for Barker they stated, “SFF Jimmy Barker is one of the most squared away firefighters that I know. He drives Engine 12 as a moved-up Senior Firefighter. He knows his area extremely well. He is well versed in all areas of firefighting, ladder operations, rescue operations and of course engine operations. He is able to think quick on his feet in any given situation. He is able to complete any task that is given to him. He assists new firefighters coming into the station of what is expected and is always willing to help out with any tasks.”

Today we highlight IAFF Local 793 member, SFF Raymond Gary. Gary came to the Columbia Fire Department in 2017. Gary began his career at Station 14 (Dentsville) and has since been stationed on Engine 12, Ladder 7, Engine 3/Hazmat 1, and now currently on Rescue 1. Before coming to Columbia Gary worked as an onsite medical representative for Amazon in Washington state.

In a commendation received for Gary they stated, “Ray possess all the best qualities of being a firefighter and member of the Columbia fire department. A true brother, ray is always help teach and educate others in the quest for being a complete firefighter. Anyone who has met him knows his work ethic, and positive demeanor. Ray Gary is who you would want to show up to your home for a fire or medical call.”

The 2022 Columbia Firefighters Association Captain

The 2022 Columbia Firefighters Association Captain of the Year goes to CPT. Raymond Champagne.

Champagne came to the fire department in 2012 and was first assigned to Engine 33 (Forest Dr.). In 2014 Champagne was transferred to Engine 1/HazMat 1 where he had spent a majority of his time stationed. Now Captain Champagne is stationed on Engine 12 (North Main St.). Prior to coming to Columbia, Champagne worked as a firefighter in Greenville while obtaining his Fire Science degree. Champagne is a member of Task Force 5, is married with a one-year-old daughter, and outside of fighting fires he enjoys traveling as well as spending time with his family and friends.

In a nomination received for CPT. Champagne the submission stated, “Captain Champagne has always been someone I can go to when I have a question about being an engineer. He always takes the time to help me through an issue, answer any questions I may have, and offer up solutions as well as training ideas. No matter what he is doing, Captain Champagne takes the time to ensure that all those around him know that they can rely on him for guidance, mentorship, and answers. Captain Champagne set the bar for being an engineer and I have no doubt he will do the same as a captain”

The 2022 Columbia Firefighters Association Firefig

The 2022 Columbia Firefighters Association Firefighter of the Year went to FEO Sami Sanders.

Sami Sekou Sanders started his career in the fire service in 1996 with the California Department of Forestry where he fought several major wildland fires. Sanders made his way to the Columbia Fire Department in 2000 and has since been a great example of employee loyalty. During his 23-year career Sanders had spent his early years on Engine 12, on Rescue 5, and then in 2005 he landed a spot on HazMat 1 (Engine 1) and he remains with HazMat 1 today (now at Station 3). Sanders assists with the HazMat program and not just as a HazMat Technician, but as a teacher and a mentor to the younger technicians.

In a nomination received for Sanders the submission stated, “Sami has influenced the department in more ways than one can count. Through tireless work ethic and being a genuine standup individual, Sami has put in years of hard work and helped inspire and teach all members of the department. There are not many people who have not sat in on a class where he instructs and educates with the sole purpose of creating a smarter fireman. Often times his phone is called with questions because he is the person most trusted. Sami truly embodies the fire culture and brotherhood by building others through education.”

The 2022 Columbia Firefighters Association Senior

The 2022 Columbia Firefighters Association Senior Firefighter of the Year is SFF Jack Harle.

Harle came to the Columbia Fire Department in 2018. Harle has since served at stations 2, 6, 23, and 8 on engines, Rescue 5, and now currently as a move-up driver on 1st shift Ladder 8. Before joining the fire service Harle was a veterinarian tech. and spent years volunteering with Palmetto Lifeline and the Humane Society. Harle also serves with the South Carolina Army National Guard as a 94R (avionic survivability and equipment repair). Harle is a resident of Lexington, enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, and their favorite vacation destination is Disney World.

In a nomination received for Harle the submission stated, “SFF Harle has been driven all year and taken on enormous amounts of responsibilities to strive to the next level. Harle accepted a permanent move up position as a driver, not to mention a support company on ladder. He quickly closed the huge learning curve that was presented with the opportunity. Harle was aggressive in taking classes all year long that included all the support classes as well as taking all the promotional classes to prepare him as he now begins testing for the next position of engineer. Harle undoubtedly has the strongest will, receives constructive criticism easily, and strives to overcome all obstacles. SFF Harle has accomplished so much this year, and brings a great attitude to work every day, but the bigger story is his actions outside of work to help his FF brothers. He has often gone on his days off to take care of his FF brothers that are in need multiple times, and done so; so easily. He worked for FF's so they may enjoy their family and children, while his children are still young. He countlessly gives of himself to his brother firefighters. Harle is the true servant to his crew, brothers, and community.”

Vega came to the Columbia Fire Department in 2020. Vega began his career at Station 9 on Devine St. where he remains stationed but now also serves as a move-up driver across Battalion 1. Vega also has his ladder company classes with Columbia and can be found riding on Tower 9. Vega, who is a resident of Irmo, is married and has two daughters, one of which is a freshman at Clemson University. On his days off he enjoys reading, concerts, hiking, fishing, and spending time with his family and two dogs. Before joining the fire service, Vega worked as a warehouse lead for a snack manufacturer. Vega also serves the Columbia Firefighters Association by helping get flower arrangements to members/retirees when we hear of a loss in their immediate family.

In a nomination received for Vega the submission stated, “Firefighter Vega has proven himself to be an excellent fireman. He is always ready for work and always has a great attitude about it. Firefighter Vega is always willing and eager to learn. Even though Firefighter Vega came into the department at a later stage than most, he has never let difference in age stop him from learning from others. People like firefighter Vega are the people who give the fire department a good image.”

Chrzanowski came to the Columbia Fire Department in 2020. Chrzanowski began his career stationed on Engine 16 (Lake Murray Blvd.) where he remains stationed today. He was born and raised in Poland before then moved to Ireland in 2005 and then to the USA in 2016. Before joining the fire service, he worked at Muv Fitness as a personal trainer. Outside of fighting fire Chrzanowski is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

In a nomination received for Chrzanowski the submission stated, “FF Chrzanowski shows up every day ready to do his job. He is always on time and always has a great attitude. He comes in, says hello to everyone and gets straight to work checking off his equipment, ensuring the truck inventory is correct and then proceeds to get his daily chores done all in an expeditious time frame. FF Chrzanowski is always professional on calls and actively engaged no matter what the situation is. He is an invaluable asset to not only the citizens of his response area but to all of his brothers and sisters as well. FF Chrzanowski has shown time and time again that he is not only reliable but also admirable as well and should be recognized as such.”

The Columbia Firefighters Association is proud to announce the 2022 Firefighter of the Year awards! The Columbia Firefighters Association FOTY awards are bestowed to an IAFF 793 firefighter at each position: firefighter, senior firefighter, engineer, and captain. Nominations are accepted throughout the calendar year and are deliberated the following January. Each day this week (Tuesday - Friday) at 7 PM we will post our winners of 2022. Help share our posts each day and help us congratulate these firefighters and celebrate their extraordinary contributions to the fire service in Columbia, SC. These firefighters will be presented their awards this year on Saturday April 29th (2nd shift day).

Did you know?

On our website www.iaff793.org we have an area where you can recognize the good work witnessed of one of our firefighters. Just click on the tab “SUPPORT US” where you will see a page labeled “COMMENDATIONS”. Anyone can do it whether they helped you on an emergency call, you’ve encountered them within the community outside the job, if you were just a bystander to their work, or even if you are another emergency responder who worked alongside one of our firefighters. The Columbia Firefighters Association is committed to making sure our citizens are aware of the skills and experience invested in their area responders.

These commendations are welcome to be about any of the firefighters serving Columbia and Richland County. IAFF Local 793 wants all of our community firefighters to know we are thankful for them. In addition, IAFF Local 793 member firefighters become eligible for our Columbia Firefighters Association firefighter of the year awards when they are commended.
